Valles Caldera Fish Monitoring Survey – volunteer opportunity

Please see update after main article.

The fishery biologists are starting their annual fish monitoring surveys. They have asked NMT to help with three surveys. The surveys are part of a multi year study to monitor the health, numbers and types of fish in the Caldera. The process involves electroshocking designated river sections throughout the Preserve. Fish are counted, measured, weighed and examined for type and health. This is a great opportunity to work alongside biology technicians, learn about the fish, where they live and explore many areas of this beautiful land.

Volunteer tasks include helping carry equipment, set up nets, recording data and assisting with the electroshocking process.

The dates of the surveys that the biology survey teams need the most help are:
June 4 – lower east fork in Hidden Valley
June 9 – lower San Antonio-western boundary
June 10 – lower Jaramillo Valley Grande
