The fishery biologists are starting their fall fish monitoring surveys. They have asked NMT to help with the following surveys. The surveys are part of a multi-year study to monitor the health, numbers/ and types of fish in the Caldera. The process involves electroshocking designated river sections throughout the Preserve. Fish are counted, measured, weighed and examined for type and health. This is a great opportunity to work alongside biology technicians, learn about the fish, where they live and explore many areas of this beautiful land.
Volunteer tasks include helping carry equipment, set up nets, recording data and assisting with the electroshocking process.
The dates of the surveys that the biology survey teams need help are:
- Tuesday, September 29th – Electrofish Upper EFJ
- Wednesday, September 30th – Electrofish EFJ | La Jara Confluence
- Tuesday, October 6th – Upper San Antonio Barrier Search
- Wednesday, October 7th – Electrofish Lower San Antonio. If vehicle access is granted, no one will be allowed to leave the survey early.
There is a good chance vehicle access will be closed to us and we will have to walk from the portapotties at the VC10 trailhead. - Tuesday, October 13th – Electrofishing Make-Up Day, in case any previously scheduled surveys are rained out.
