Youth!

Like any sport, fly-fishing’s future depends on our youth to remain viable well into the future. New Mexico Trout is pleased to welcome and involve youth at all its activities, whether that young one is a family member, a friend, or a neighbor. We also thank those members who continue to introduce and teach fly fishing to youth.

Valles Caldera Learn to Fly Fish Classes

New Mexico Trout members conduct Fly Fishing Clinics for Youth and Adults on the Valles Caldera. Please see the Valles Caldera calendar for the dates of these clinics.

Youth Fly-Fishing / Fly-tying Classes

Interested in learning how to cast with a fly rod or tie flies? New Mexico Trout is happy to provide instruction and demonstrations for individuals and small groups, especially Scouts and education groups.

Please contact Youth Chairman if interested!

Boy Scouts: Fly Fishing merit badge

In 2002 the Boy Scouts of America unveiled the Fly Fishing merit badge for Boy Scouts across the United States to earn. New Mexico is home to hundreds of Boy Scout troops, and each of them is an opportunity to teach the art of fly fishing!

New Mexico Trout is excited to provide fly fishing merit badge instruction to Boy Scouts troops in the Albuquerque and Rio Rancho areas. Merit badge requirements can be found by clicking here, and a complete fly fishing merit badge booklet can be purchased at the Great Southwest Council office. Please contact Youth Chairman for more information.

New Mexico Trout members: We are looking for fly fishing merit badge counselors! If you are at least 18 years old, are proficient in the merit badge subject, are able to work effectively with Scout-age boys, and are (or will become) registered with the Boy Scouts of America, then you are eligible to be a counselor. Contact Youth Chairman if interested!

Share your photos!

We would love to feature photos of youth showing their fly-fishing catches and even flies they’ve tied! Please submit your photos (digital photos only, please) — with a note from a parent or guardian granting permission to New Mexico Trout for the photo’s use, and permission to display your child’s name.

New Mexico Trout Youth membership discount

Did you know that New Mexico Trout offers Junior membership? For only $15 per year, youth 16 years of age or younger can be a part of the New Mexico Trout family, with all the rights and privileges of adult membership (voting and bi-monthly newsletter).
