
Ron Loehman, NMT Conservation Chair In the last newsletter I wrote that the Forest Service had cancelled our May 31st conservation project because the grazing permittees strongly objected to any structures that might keep their cattle from accessing the Rio Cebolla. The meadow sections of the Cebolla have been seriously degraded by many years of uncontrolled grazing. Our project would have fenced about two acres of the stream as an experimental plot to show the recovery that is possible if cattle were excluded. From the May/June 2014 Newsletter The Homer's knot is named for one of the godfathers of sportfishing, Homer Circle. It has been attributed to Lefty Kreh who evolved it during a series of tests to create a strong loop knot. It was then incorporated into the book "Practical Fishing Knots" which Lefty co-authored with Mark Sosin. Accordingly it is quite often known as Lefty Kreh's Loop Knot, or sometimes the Non-slip Mono Knot. This knot makes a very strong fixed loop in the end of the line. By Francis Peter, Youth Director Volunteers from New Mexico Trout conduct fly fishing clinics for youths (ages 8-16) and adults, allowing up to 20 participants the opportunity to fish the rivers on the Preserve. Participants spend a half day learning about equipment, tackle, knots, stream insect sampling and identification.
